About us...

Dee’s Abled Children support disadvantaged, disabled children living in the district of Moratuwa, south of Colombo. This is an impoverished area with a higher than average percentage of babies being born with a disability. Daynore Cameron, Chair and founder of the charity first became aware of this area of great need while working in Sri Lanka as an aid worker following the Tsunami of 26th December 2004. Many of the families now supported by the charity lost their homes as a result of the Tsunami. Daynore became involved with a small special needs centre in Koralawella, a district of Moratuwa after researching facilities for children with special needs. The centre, now known as the Meth Mihira Special Educational Centre was at this stage being run single-handedly by the principal Sr. Jachintha who is a Sister of Charity.

It was as a result of Daynore’s admiration for Sr. Jachintha, who has dedicated her life to helping disadvantaged and disabled children, that the charity was formed with the aim of providing financial assistance to improve the quality of education and health care provided by the centre.

Dee’s Abled Children became a registered charity in September 2007. The object of the charity is to promote good health and education for children and young adults with physical and learning disabilities.

We aim to achieve this through our sponsorship of the Meth Mihira Special Education Centre and the development of services for families with children who have special needs living in this area.
